Blue Bell (Whitpain township) was originally known as Pigeontown, Pennsylvania, after the large flocks of the now-extinct
passenger pigeons that once gathered there. The town was renamed in 1840 after the historically prominent Blue Bell Inn. Originally believed to have been named after Richard Whitpaine, a London butcher that purchased 4500 acres here in the early 1700's, Whitpain township includes zip code 19422 and parts of 19002 and is located in Montgomery County, PA.

Broad Axe, the area at the intersection of Skippack Pikes and Butler Pikes, is named after the Broad Axe Tavern that was established in 1681.  It recently underwent a major renovation and is now open for business.

Blue Bell is known for its large executive-style homes, major business parks, small community shopping facilities, and small businesses. In July 2005, “Money” magazine ranked Blue Bell 14th on its list of the "100 Best Places to Live in the United States".

Blue Bell is home to the global headquarters of Unisys, a provider of information technology services and products. Aetna/US Healthcare, an insurance provider, also maintains a headquarters office in Blue Bell.  It also is home to the Montgomery County Community College and Wings Field Airport.  Blue Bell is centrally located in Montgomery County, which boasts a headquarters workforce of 8,400 jobs with a total workforce of over 490,000 employees, the highest of all counties surrounding Philadelphia.

"Forbes recently ranked Montgomery County ninth in the list of top 20 places to raise a family. Forbes' rankings are skewed toward counties with good school districts. The counties were also ranked using 10 data points: cost of living, graduation rate, standardized scores, home price, property tax rate as a percentage of median home price, percentage of homes occupied by owner, per-capita income, air quality, crime rate and commute time."
